Who We Are
Dryad Ecology was set up in 2015 by Barry Wright and his wife Anne. Barry has more than 38 years practical experience in ecology and Anne has assisted and developed her skills over the same period. Between us we can cover a wide range of surveys and offer clients a competitive and friendly service focussed on their needs.
What We do
We are a small professional ecological consutltancy based near York dedicated to providing ecological surveys that match customer needs and offering realistic, pragmatic and cost effective solutions to any issues that may arise.

How We Can Help
The key areas where we can help are:

Protected species surveys - Bats, Great Crested Newts, Water Voles etc.

Preparing Non-licenced Method statements (NLMS) to deal with protected species issues or developing and submitting mitigation licence applications.

Scoping surveys for proposed developments to identify any ecological constraints that may need dealing with before proceeding.

Ecological Clerk of Works - supervising mitigation plans.

Public Inquiries - Preparation of evidence and attendance at sessions.
The range of species and habitats we can deal with include:

Amphibians - Great Crested Newt surveys (GCNs).

White-clawed Crayfish - torch surveys

Reptile surveys - carpet refugia and walked surveys

Bats - emergence/ re-entry surveys using infrared recording equipment. Transects, surveys and monitoring of landscape-scale activity using BATPODS (More info...).

Dragonflies/ Damselflies - Walked transect surveys.

Butterflies - Walked transect surveys.

Water Voles - Ditch, stream, pond surveys.

Otters/ Mink - Watercourse surveys.

Phase 1 - Habitat mapping and considering injurious weeds and the presence, or potential presence, of protected species (Extended Phase 1).

NVC - Detailed vegetation classification to NVC standards.

Woodlands/ significant (ancient and/or veteran) trees - Survey and evaluation

Hedgerows - Hedgerows Regulations (1997) assessment and mitigation.
Barry has specialised in woodland and hedgerow survey and evaluation for his PhD research at Sheffield Hallam University.
The consultancy is run by Barry who has more than 40 years experience and is assisted by his wife Anne. We cover a wide range of species and habitats. We both have survey licences for GCNs and Barry has a survey licence for bats in all English counties. Barry has also been the named ecologist on GCN and bat mitigation licences within the last three years. We have dealt with projects large and small, including:
